Ancestry Surprise

Today I did some research and wrote a Yoga Nidra script, and had hoped to get it recorded. But, life threw a gem in my lap.

Now this isn’t something that you would normally think of as a Holistic approach to finding your genuine self. However, I do think that it fits.

This morning in amongst all of my doings, my ADD self decided to check my ancestry.com account and there was a message. A man stated that he had a picture of my Great Grandparents and Great Uncle. So I decided to take a look. To my surprise, they were indeed my great grandparents on my Grandmother’s side and finding any information about the Volenec side is exciting to me. As the search had become stagnant for a while. Here is the picture that he sent.

“Mom and Dad Volenec” is definitely my great grandparents. Emil, is my Grandmother, Helen’s brother. Her other siblings include, Antonia (Tina), Louise, Besse, and Charlie (there may be a couple more, but think that is all of them).

Well, This man said that his Grandfather was Charlie. Helen’s brother. So I connected with a long lost cousin. How cool is that! Before I get too ahead of myself. This is the picture that I had of my Great Grandmother, Antonia.I don’t know which child she is holding, but it’s an awesome picture that definitely confirms that she was indeed the same woman.

My cousin D, we will call him that for now as I haven’t asked permission to share his identity, and I put pieces of a puzzle together today. My Grandma Helen and Adolph Sr. had 11 children. So D’s Dad worked with my oldest uncle in the late 60’s. They became friends. Not knowing that My Uncle was related to him, until later (I’m assuming). Because in the late 80’s my Uncle helped D’s Dad connect with his biological father, Charlie. D only remembers meeting his grandfather once. This is the only picture of Charlie that he had.

Things were different back then. Most folks didn’t talk about personal affairs like this. But D’s Grandfather and my Great Uncle Charlie, had been married before and had an only child with his first wife. So, he wasn’t known to all of us all of these years until now.

D asked if I had a picture of our Great Grandfather, As D’s dad had never seen his face n( it was hidden in the picture that they had. Well, I had one in a bag of photos that my Mom had given me.

So, these are our Great Grandparents, Bohumil and Antonia. Im not sure which child is in the picture.

Anyway, a little bit of me became more genuine through this ancestry connection today and felt the relevance for my blog. Sometimes you look outside the box. Sometimes life just gives you gems.

Family is family. Sometimes we don’t always know the importance of it all. But, it is important. People that come into your life with purpose, some whom are blood and some whom are not, can have an impact on our soul and definitely become a part of our whole self. Good, Bad indifferent – people that come and go in our lives play important rolls into who we decide to become. We get to choose the parts, and if they stay or not. But they definitely affect our cake.

The Cake!

This is an analogy that I came up with as a kid. I sometimes ask myself which part each person that comes into my life is. My analogy substitutes people as ingredients for my cake of life; some are my sugar (constant sweetness, your encouragers), some are the flower (help build your structure can be good or bad/ definitly folks that teach us lessons), some are the eggs(they are the ones that make it all stick together), then the icing (passions and loves), and sprinkles (all the others, even the sweet folks that you meet on the street, hold doors), and, some are just indifferent crumbs. But, all in all they encompass important ingredients to your life. You can’t have some with out the other. Hope your cake tastes good.

Yoga as we don’t necessarily know it…

The meaning of Yoga is literally the unity of oneself. Your consciousness and universal consciousness.

Ultimately, Yoga is the balance of body, mind and spirit. Some methods of yoga concentrate on more of the physical aspects, and others, more on the mind. However, all have the ability to enhance your spirit, your energy source.

Just so you know, There are more descriptive, definitive overviews of Yoga out there. I am however, giving you my condensed version that I have obtained. So if you have questions, please ask.

There are 4 different Paths of Yoga (Most modern day Yoga encompass these) There are different spellings of these as well. I decided to give you the version that I learned.:

They have found that Yoga began approximately 3000-15000 BC. Where drawings of yoga poses were found on stone tablets. Somewhat changed into modern art forms, the forms of yoga that we know today continue to follow and channel its original roots.

So based on different ideologies and concentrations, many forms of yoga have evolved.

Hatha – Hathat means “willful”. Also meaning Balance. Utilizing the mind to release as one does poses. Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Iyengar and Power Yoga all fall under the umbrella of Hatha Yoga. Hatha yoga prepares the body for a more spiritual practice of meditation. In my opinion, I believe that depending on what type of yoga you are practicing, other types can be considered under this umbrella as well. Control of the Body and Mind in unison.

Iyengar –

Bikram/Hot

Ashtanga

Vinyasa

Slow Flow

Kundalini

Yin

Chair/Wall

Restorative

Prenatal

Anusara

Jivanukti

All forms include postures or asanas, and the concentration of breath.

Im sure that there are probably more. But, these are the different forms of Yoga that would be most commonly heard of.

The girl in the picture is doing the tree pose, a balancing asana. The Sanskrit name is Vrikshasana.

As for me, I do my own thing. I enjoy taking a Vinyasa, Slow Flow, Chair, Yin, & Restorative class. But, I mainly practice on my own. I never push myself to hard without a concentration of breathe, and balance. And, to be honest, I often choose specific asanas that I can use to physically and mentally relax with (I.e. Childs pose, mountain, downward dog, cat, cow, etc…). The good thing is that I can make it as difficult or as easy as I want during any practice. I am working on becoming more disciplined and practicing more frequently than I do. And I can say that I practice some part of Yoga on a daily basis, but the asana part is where I need more balance. But, I am aware. So the growth continues.

Yoga has literally helped me get out of a dark depression and in that I have found myself and a calling to share it with others. How cool is that!!!! I am grateful for Yoga being a part of my life.

Through Yoga, the benefits out weigh any reason I can think of NOT to make this a part of my life.

It definitely increases flexibility, reduces stress, and anxiety. It helps balance metabolism. Improves respiration and can improve memory, heart health, quality of sleep, and wayyyyy more!

I will continue on tomorrow with some asanas and an easy sequence that I hope will help you start a Yoga journey if you’ve never been here before.

Stay Safe!

The Reiki Way

Reiki = a holistic therapy/ modality, that concentrates on balancing energy.

Chakras = 7 meditative points that where used in ancient times as focal points connecting mind, body and spirit. Envision 7 constantly moving orbs that pinpoint energy and light. Starting at the top of your head (where the fontanelle is located when we are babies), down the spine to the perineum. (see diagram)

Have you ever closed your eyes and felt something in front of you, but nothing was there? Have you ever experienced intuition, or “had a good feeling or bad feeling” and then moved towards or away from something based on that “gut” feeling? We all have unexplained connections towards certain people. We have thoughts that guide us in directions based on how we “feel”. Or simply when we recognize peace while looking at a beautiful sunset, or the calm while walking in nature. That is the best way that I can explain our individual energy.

We are more than just mental & physical beings walking around the planet.

Our energy stays even keeled and peaceful when our chakras are relaxed & grounded. However, when chakras are blocked, we feel stuck.  An example of a stuck chakra is when our creativity stalls, when we mumble or become soft spoken, we become indecisive, etc.  And, an example of a blown open chakra , is when we  feel like screaming, arguing, drinking too much, bad habits take place, not allowing good possibilities to cross our path. If either of these happen, our minds can close off, frustration or pain can set in our physical bodies. Yet, with balanced chakras, lives are peaceful, we actually observe beautiful things unrecognizable before, healing can be expedited(mentally and physically), creativity flows, our minds open and we become kinder towards our neighbor, and positive possibilities become endless, etc…

The Reiki Modality helps clear the clutter, so to speak.  Helps to balance the Chakras, giving your energy self a means of creating an equilibrium of mind, body and spirit. We come to know our true self, our genuine self. Also, when our minds are grounded and open, we create a path for mental and physical awareness, sometimes never seen to ourselves.

I am a 3rd degree Reiki Master.
My sessions go like this:

You will have an appointment. If there is something that is troubling you, please tell me. Therefore, allowing intentional focus in a specific area. Everything is confidential. In a secluded room, you lay down on your back, relaxed – usually on a massage table, fully clothed. If you need a blanket for warmth, let me know. Getting cozy is fine. Get yourself comfortable, close your eyes, & stay awake if possible, but not necessary. During the session the I will guide energy by moving my hands in variety of places above your body. Sometimes slightly touching, but never inappropriately. At the end of the session, I will let you know when to open your eyes. If you missed any of it by falling asleep that is ok, as it is energy doing the work. A typical session is around 45 minutes up to an hour.

The average session can run between $40-$80 per hour, depending on where you are located. However, I have heard that Reiki will more than likely be covered by some insurance companies as it is becoming a commonality in many hospitals.

Below are some Interesting articles that I found, confirming evidence about the potential of Reiki:

Using Reiki Principles

I say this every morning while putting on 5 bead bracelets (these were made by beautiful friend. She gifted them to me. How lucky am I!!!)

Open your mind and say this to yourself or aloud:

Reiki Principles:

Just for today, I will not anger.

Just for today, I will not worry.

Just for today, I am grateful.

Just for today, I will do my work to the best of my ability.

Just for today, I will love all living things.

Wishing you all safe and happy days!!

The Nitty Gritty

Many modalities provide a multitude of potential benefits for self: stress relief, pain management, spiritual awareness, sleep, fear alleviation, just to name few. So to identify what each of these will do will be different for the individual trying them. Also, with many of the processes, repetition is key for a successful end result. You can google the topics, to get a general overview. However, my focus on each topic will be an outline including a definition, history, the practice, my own testimonial and where you can go to learn more and about supplies needed to practice, if needed.

I split these topics into 2 categories; 1.  processes that are done on self or others generating a body and/or mind experience with a focus on obtaining a genuine self, stress relief, pain management, etc.. 2. Are instruments and/or awarenesses that can be used to enhance our body and mind. Some of which compliment the processes.

(My list has grown from yesterday and will continue to grow.)

Welcome!

These are trying times for all. I thought that it might be a good thing to spread love, peace, and some sort of comfort. After many years of researching and searching for ways to balance myself, I figured now is a good time to share the information.

No one expected a pandemic of this scale to make us jump track. Hang in there tho. Things will get better. It is essential to find something good in every day: a kindness, compassion and/or little things to do for ourselves to keep our heads up. We are all an important part of the whole! And yes! We are resilient. Its only a decision we make.

Through this blog, The Holistic Road, I will offer ideas and insight: tools for inner peace ,balance, relaxation, stress and fear relief all while promoting kindness to yourself and others. Open your mind to the incredible abilities that YOU all have!

Utilizing a holistic approach, we will look at the mental, the physical, social, and environmental means to stabilize our inner self and get to know our genuine being better. Recognizing that these concepts covered are tools that we can use individually in hopes of enhancing our inner self. These are not my creations in any way. However, techniques that have helped me.

The methods that I will be discussing are not mine and I won’t be offended if they don’t resonate with you. Many people are called to them when they need them. So my hope is when and if you need them, they will be here for you as stepping stones or inspiration for your own journey.
